San Simeon, also known as Hearst Castle, is the opulent home of publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst. This 165-room Moorish-style castle draws inspiration from the Alhambra, the church towers of Ronda, and the picturesque hill towns of southern Spain. Constructed of concrete, it sprawls across a vast landscape of gardens, terraces, pools, and walkways on a hillside that offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The interiors are exquisitely crafted, while the gardens are enhanced by colonnades, pergolas, and thoughtfully positioned artworks, including a Greco-Roman temple facade that overlooks the Neptune Pool.

 spiritual haven amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, this Shinto shrine in the heart of Tokyo was originally built by 100,000 volunteers in honor of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Shoken. The Meiji Shrine, the largest Shinto shrine in Tokyo, was reconstructed in 1958 after being destroyed during World War II. Utterly simple in design, it is constructed of unpainted timber, which adds to its serene charm. Color is used sparingly, with white and green dominating the palette. Unlike other historic buildings reconstructed in and around Tokyo in the 1950s, the Meiji Shrine utilized the correct traditional materials, primarily cypress wood and copper, as evident in the elegant design of the Inner Shrine.

The Viceroy’s House is centered around its magnificent dome, crafted from stunning pink and cream sandstone, and is undoubtedly one of the finest and most original domes in the world. While it adheres to Neo-Classical principles, the design also incorporates elements from India’s rich architectural heritage. The brilliance of the architect’s vision allows Indian features, such as chattris (roof pavilions) and chujjas (broadly projecting cornices), to blend seamlessly with European and Classical design elements. As a result, the Viceroy’s House stands as a remarkable fusion of Classical, European, and Indian architectural styles.

Erich Mendelsohn created numerous sketches of futuristic buildings, and these ideas culminated in the distinctive design of this observatory and laboratory constructed for physicist Albert Einstein and his team of researchers. The smooth, curving white structure resembles modeling clay, yet it is actually made of brick and concrete. With no architectural precedent, this national monument continues to serve as an active facility for the Potsdam Astrophysical Institute. Its innovative design remains a testament to Mendelsohn’s visionary approach to modern architecture.

Above the doors framed with striking red ceramic tesserae, there is an impressive mosaic created by Italian painter Nenne Sanguineti Poggi, dating back to the 1950s. This mosaic is divided into seven vertical panels, each crowned with a bold white geometric belfry. The belfry is topped with a roof that resembles a tukul, the traditional hut of the East African highlands, adding a unique cultural reference to the overall design.

The tower is a thrilling mix of Russian Gothic and Baroque design.
